10 years on.
Like so many familiar stories of unfair treatment by the LEA and schools ours is no different. We went into the whole world of having a child with Asperger's syndrome with 'rose coloured glasses' thinking that the provision was out there and we only had to ask. We should have known better after repeated failures by health professionals to diagnose him.

To cut a long and stressful story short, when we lived in Cambridgeshire, we found a fantastic private speech therapist(Wordswell SP&L Therapy) who supported us through our bad times. She put us in touch with Melinda Nettleton who specialised in justice for children with special needs and after that a huge weight was lifted from us. Her guidance and expertise got us through a very stressful time in our lives and we are forever grateful to her for her work and support. I will always remember a few minutes before having to go into the tribunal, heavily pregnant and very nervous, Melinda came into the restroom and said 'Mrs. Wright, one piece of advice. Don't always take the first thing that people tell you as the gospel truth' (unless of course it was her)'. I have carried this advice on years later and it has changed me for the better.

My son is now 14 years old and doing very well at Calthorpe secondary school who have an excellent support unit. He obviously still has his difficulties but he has the support to overcome them and build for the future. We would not have had this if it wasn't for the statement being in place allocating him the required hours and specifying the correct course of action expected. The statement also ensured that he got a place in a language unit attached to his Junior school which meant he could attend the mainstream school with the experienced help and be pulled out for social skills therapy. In year 6, he eventually spent all of his time in the mainstream school with just the support of his fantastic LSAs.

It hasn't been easy and we still have a few worrying times but the statement was our key to getting him the help we required that's why it was worth every penny. In an idealistic world, we parents with special needs children shouldn't have to go private, but for us it was the only way we could trust that we were getting independent advice away from any local authority who's main concern is their budget.

So a huge thanks to Melinda. Keep up the good work.
