1. xoom.com Wednesday, May 12, 2010 @ 8:32:00 PM
I am usually too lazy to sit down and write feed backs on my online transactions. But my dealing with xoom.com was by far the worst online experience I've ever had. I was transfering $2999 to my sick father in Poland. He needed that money really fast to pay for his medical procedure. I elected to use xoom.com after reading their advertisement where they were braging on how speedy and smooth their transactions were. As soon as I submitted the payment I received confirmation email saying that my request had been processed and it would take 3 days (instead of minutes) to verify the payment. That made me suspicious and I started reading some of the reviews about xoom.com online. I was shocked to see how bad they were and got really nervous. I decided not to take any chances so I called their customer service to cancel the transaction. They did cancelled the transaction. I received the email with confirmation number saying that the transaction was cancelled, and the agent that I first spoke with on the phone assured me that the money wouldn't be taken from account (since it was not processed yet). I checked my online account with my bank and indeed there was no pending transaction. 3 days later I noticed that I had low balance in my checking account. Sure enough xoom took $2999 plus their fee $4.99. I called them again, but every time I spoke with them they had different story for me. Sometimes I wouldn't be lucky enough to even hear their explanation - they would simply hang up on me. They were telling me that there was some 3rd party that is handling the money for them and that it would take 7-10 business days to have the money redeposited in my account. Then they changed the story again saying that the Polish bank had the money and there is nothing they could do to get it back. The money did arrive in bank in Poland 9 days later, although the transaction was cancelled and I was assured that they were going to return full amount to me.
From $2999 that was supposed to be transeferred to my dad's account only $2613 made it there. My father requested from Polish bank full review of the transaction. Polish bank told him that before xoom.com deposited the money in his account they exchanged it back and forth from US dollars to Polish currency and then back to US dollars, on a extremely low exchange rate, way below the official exchange rates that banks normally use.
That damned transaction cost me $390 when it was all set and done. I felt like I was rapped, the customer service was so rude, and arrogant, lying to me each time I spoke with them or simply hanging up on me. My father never got the money in time which resulted in delaying his medical procedure for another 2 weeks, not to mention the embarrassment he and I had to endure.
